Stacking Blocks and Breaking Borders: The Wild Real-Life Spy Thriller Behind the Tetris Movie
When most people hear the word Tetris, they picture falling geometric shapes, frantic button-mashing, and the hauntingly catchy strains of the “Korobeiniki” folk tune. They think of a timeless puzzle game, not high-stakes international espionage, corporate corruption, and the collapsing Soviet Union.
Yet, the biographical drama-thriller Tetris (released by Apple TV+ in 2023 and directed by Jon S. Baird) turns the chaotic race for the game’s licensing rights into a gripping, retro-infused geopolitical chess match. Starring Taron Egerton as Dutch video game entrepreneur Henk Rogers, the film reveals that getting the world’s most addictive puzzle out of the USSR was far more dangerous than clearing a high-level board.
Here is the complete breakdown of the plot, the players, and the wild true story that inspired the film.
Phase 1: The Spark – Henk Discovers the Code
The movie kicks off in the late 1980s. Henk Rogers is a struggling game designer and entrepreneur living in Tokyo, trying to make a breakthrough in a male-dominated market. While attending a major software trade show, he stumbles across a rudimentary computer game running on an Electronika 60 terminal. It is Tetris, created by a soft-spoken Soviet software engineer named Alexey Pajitnov (played by Nikita Efremov).
Fascinated by its hypnotic, universal appeal—a game that requires no language and preys on our psychological urge to “create order out of chaos”—Henk immediately recognizes its massive potential. He bets everything he owns, taking out massive loans to secure the Japanese console and computer rights.
However, Henk soon realizes he has only scratched the surface. The global rights are a tangled web of confusion, split across territories, platforms, and shady intermediaries.
Phase 2: Enter Nintendo and the Giant Stakes
Back in Japan, Henk manages to score a secretive audience with executives at Nintendo, who are quietly preparing to launch a revolutionary piece of hardware: the Game Boy.
Henk has a stroke of genius: Mario is great for home consoles, but Tetris is the ultimate match for a portable, pocket-sized screen. He convinces Nintendo to bundle Tetris with every Game Boy, a decision that would ultimately cement both the console and the game into pop-culture immortality.
There is just one massive, terrifying catch. Henk doesn’t actually own the handheld rights.
In fact, nobody outside the Soviet Union truly owns Tetris. Because private property and intellectual copyrights legally did not exist in the USSR, the rights are technically held by ELORG, a corrupt state-controlled software agency.
Phase 3: Corporate Sharks and Cold War Paranoia
As Henk tries to lock down the rights, a brutal corporate tug-of-war erupts. Enter the heavy-hitting media tycoon Robert Maxwell and his cutthroat son, Kevin Maxwell. Using their vast financial empire, Mirrorsoft, they attempt to strong-arm, bribe, and maneuver their way into global ownership of the game.
Realizing that the Maxwells and other opportunistic brokers are trying to cut him out—and potentially swindle Alexey Pajitnov out of any financial reward—Henk takes a massive gamble. He buys a plane ticket straight to Moscow, stepping directly behind the Iron Curtain as the Soviet Union begins its final, unstable collapse.
Phase 4: Behind the Iron Curtain
Landing in Moscow, Henk finds himself entirely out of his depth. He is trailed, monitored, and intimidated at every turn by KGB agents and corrupt Soviet bureaucrats who view the software as a national bargaining chip. Even his assigned tour guide/interpreter turns out to be a watchful agent of the state.
Despite the danger, Henk manages to track down Alexey Pajitnov. What starts as a tense meeting evolves into a genuine, heartfelt friendship. Alexey introduces Henk to the underground culture of Moscow—including local nightclubs—and they bond over their shared love for code, creativity, and human connection.
With the clock ticking and the Maxwell family closing in with a rival buyout offer backed by massive political leverage, Henk, Alexey, and a few rogue Soviet allies must outsmart the collapsing regime.
Phase 5: The Climax and Resolution
The movie ratchets up the tension into a cinematic thriller climax, featuring a high-stakes race to finalize contracts before a rival faction freezes them out, capped off by a tense, action-packed escape sequence as Henk tries to flee Soviet airspace with the signed documents.
