Before the Stardom: The Untold Pre-Debut Journey of Song Kang
Long before he earned the moniker “Son of Netflix”, captured global hearts in Sweet Home and Nevertheless, or dominated international trending lists, Song Kang was a regular young man trying to figure out his place in the world.
While his striking visuals, towering height, and undeniable charisma make it seem like he was destined for the spotlight from birth, Song Kang’s pre-debut era was defined by quiet self-discovery, unexpected childhood ambitions, and a fierce dedication to a singular craft.
An Athletic and Artistic Lineage
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in a household that leaned heavily into physical fitness and the arts. Athleticism ran deep in his family genes: his father was a professional artistic gymnast, and his grandfather was a wrestler.
However, young Song Kang didn’t immediately gravitate toward sports or performance. In fact, his earliest career aspirations were remarkably grounded in structural design. In interviews with Cosmopolitan Korea, the actor revealed that after seeing captivating pictures of buildings and interiors as a child, he dreamed of becoming an architect or a furniture designer. Ultimately, he shelved the dream because he honestly had “no idea where [he] needed to start”.
The Titanic Spark and the Pivot to Acting
The turning point that steered him toward the screen came from Hollywood classic cinema. Like many aspiring actors around the world, Song Kang experienced a cinematic awakening watching Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic (1997). The raw emotion and intensity of DiCaprio’s performance left a permanent impression, planting the seed of what would become his ultimate life calling: acting.
To pursue this dream seriously, Song Kang later enrolled in the prestigious Konkuk University, majoring in the Department of Film Arts—the very same alma mater as BTS member Jin. It was during his university years that he laid the rigorous technical and theoretical foundations of his craft.
Turning Down K-Pop Idol Scouts
Given his striking features, immaculate proportions, and natural screen presence, it comes as no surprise that the entertainment industry came knocking early.
During his pre-debut days, Song Kang was scouted multiple times by various K-Pop idol agencies. In an era where many aspiring actors readily accept idol training as a stepping stone into the industry, Song Kang boldly turned them down. He knew precisely where his heart lay. Rejecting the fast track to a music career, he chose to focus entirely on honing his acting skills, refusing to compromise on his vision of becoming a dramatic actor.
The Grinds of Humble Beginnings
Before officially signing with his agency, Namoo Actors, in December 2016, Song Kang spent his time building a diverse set of hobbies and skills—ranging from playing the piano and reading mystery novels to practicing Kendo. These quiet years of introspection helped shape the deeply emotional, empathetic depth he later brought to his television roles.
When he finally stepped in front of the camera for his official acting debut in the 2017 tvN romantic comedy The Liar and His Lover (playing the sweet, music-loving supporting character Baek Jin-woo), it wasn’t an overnight fluke. It was the culmination of years of quiet discipline, rejected shortcuts, and an unwavering belief in a dream sparked by a movie screen decades prior.
Looking back at his pre-debut journey, it is clear that Song Kang didn’t just stumble into fame—he deliberately built his foundation brick by brick, ensuring that when his moment finally arrived, he was more than ready to hold the stage.
