From Bureaucrat to National Mentor: The Incredible Journey of Dr. Vikas Divyakirti
When people search for “Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS?”, they are usually met with a fascinating nuance. While he did successfully clear the grueling Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination on his very first attempt, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti is not a career Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. Instead, he chose a path that allowed him to impact hundreds of thousands of aspirants rather than a single government department.
Today, he is widely recognized as one of India’s most influential educators, an entrepreneur, an author, and the visionary founder of Drishti IAS.
The Early Life and Academic Brilliance
Born on December 26, 1973, in Bhiwani, Haryana, Vikas Divyakirti grew up with a deep-seated inclination toward academics. His educational journey is nothing short of extraordinary. He moved to Delhi, where he studied at Zakir Husain Delhi College and later earned multiple degrees from the University of Delhi.
His academic credentials span a wide range of disciplines, showcasing an insatiable appetite for learning:
- Bachelor’s degrees in Commerce and History
- Master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
- Advanced studies and degrees in Sociology and Philosophy
Before stepping into full-time coaching, he worked as an assistant professor at Delhi University, imparting knowledge to undergraduate students.
Clearing the UPSC Exam and Choosing a Different Path
In 1996, at the age of 23, Divyakirti appeared for the civil services examination for the first time. He successfully cleared it, securing an All-India Rank (AIR) of 384.
He was allocated to the Central Secretariat Service and briefly served as a section officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the rigid structure, red tape, and slow pace of bureaucratic change left him unfulfilled. Realizing that his true calling lay in education and empowerment, he made the bold decision to resign from his government post after just a few months.
Founding Drishti IAS
In November 1999, Divyakirti laid the foundation of Drishti IAS in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi—the ultimate hub for civil service aspirants. Starting with just a handful of students, the institute gradually evolved into a premier coaching powerhouse.
