The Roots of a Masterpiece: The Shakers and Elder Joseph Brackett

Long before it became a staple of concert halls and school auditoriums, the tune known worldwide as “Simple Gifts” was born in quiet devotion. In 1848, Elder Joseph Brackett of the Alfred Shaker Village in Maine composed the melody as a functional piece for his community’s religious practices and dances.

The Shakers, officially known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, placed a deep emphasis on humility, hard work, and communal living. Brackett’s creation was designed to embody these exact ideals. Its words and notes centered on the joy of letting go of excess, embracing modesty, and finding personal freedom through a clear, uncluttered way of life.

Aaron Copland and the Transformation into an American Anthem

For nearly a century, the melody remained preserved primarily within Shaker communities, passed down orally or through private manuscripts. That changed dramatically in 1944, when legendary American composer Aaron Copland was searching for a fitting musical backdrop for a new ballet commissioned by choreographer Martha Graham.
