Gateway to Tropical Hainan: An Overview of Haikou Meilan International Airport

Located on China’s picturesque tropical Hainan Island, Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) serves as the primary aviation gateway to Haikou, the vibrant capital of Hainan Province. Since opening its doors in May 1999, HAK has transformed from a regional airfield into a major international aviation hub, playing a critical role in supporting the economic growth of the Hainan Free Trade Port.

Dual-Terminal Infrastructure and Modern Engineering

Meilan Airport operates on a modern “dual-terminal, dual-runway” model following the grand rollout of its comprehensive Phase II expansion. This layout provides ample capacity to handle tens of millions of travelers each year.

  • Terminal 1 (T1): Primarily handles domestic flight services (with specific carrier exceptions) and features a streamlined layout designed for fast processing.
  • Terminal 2 (T2): Opened in December 2021, this architectural marvel spans roughly 300,000 square meters. It handles international and regional flights, alongside select domestic operations for major carriers like Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines.
  • Runway & Airfield Standards: The airport boasts a Code 4F-rated second runway measuring 3,600 meters long and 60 meters wide, making it fully equipped to accommodate ultra-large wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380.

A Shopping and Transit Haven

Beyond its operational capabilities, Haikou Meilan is widely celebrated for its unique passenger amenities and seamless connectivity.
