How Much Does a Music License Cost? A Comprehensive Pricing Guide

Whether you are editing a YouTube video, launching a business, producing an indie film, or running a social media marketing campaign, adding the right soundtrack can completely transform your project. However, using copyrighted music legally requires a music license.

Because prices aren’t one-size-fits-all, understanding how much a music license costs depends entirely on what you are doing, where you are showing it, and who made the track.

1. Synchronization (Sync) Licenses: For Video, Film, and Ads

A sync license is required whenever you pair music with moving images—such as in a YouTube video, a TikTok advertisement, a corporate presentation, a TV show, or a movie.

Because sync licenses involve negotiations between the songwriters (publishers) and the record labels (master owners), prices vary drastically:

  • Independent & Pre-Cleared Tracks ($5 to $500): If you use stock music platforms, royalty-free libraries, or direct-to-creator marketplaces, prices are often flat-rate or subscription-based. Micro-licenses for basic online or social media content can cost as little as a few dollars.
  • Indie Artists & Deep Cuts ($500 to $5,000+): Licensing an actual song from an independent, up-and-coming artist typically starts around a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.
  • Mainstream Hits ($10,000 to $500,000+): Licensing a globally recognized, chart-topping song for a commercial, film trailer, or major TV show can skyrocket into six figures. Major sync deals depend heavily on how the song is used (background vs. featured), the duration, and whether the license covers a single country or the entire world.

2. Public Performance Licenses: For Businesses and Public Spaces

If you own a retail store, restaurant, gym, bar, or office and want to play background music for your customers or employees, you generally need a Public Performance License.
