Beyond the Horse-Riding Dance: Does PSY Still Make Music?
It has been over a decade since the entire planet was swept up in an invisible lasso, doing the horse-riding dance, and shouting “Oppa Gangnam Style!” In 2012, PSY (Park Jae-sang) turned the music industry upside down, shattering YouTube records and becoming a literal global phenomenon.
But once the viral smoke cleared, many casual music fans wondered: What happened to PSY? Does he still make music, or was he a one-hit wonder of the internet age?
The short answer is a resounding yes. PSY is very much active in the music industry—though his role has evolved significantly.
From Global Megastar to Label Boss
While PSY hasn’t spent every waking hour in front of the camera, he never actually left the music business. After parting ways with his longtime agency YG Entertainment in 2018, PSY made a massive power move: he founded his own independent entertainment agency and record label, P Nation, in 2019.
Instead of chasing global pop charts as his primary full-time job, PSY transitioned into a kingmaker and mentor. Through P Nation, he has played a pivotal role in shaping modern K-pop and hip-hop, signing and managing major South Korean artists. By stepping behind the scenes, he became the architect for other rising stars, lending his decades of industry experience to nurture fresh talent.
PSY 9th and Collaborations with BTS
Despite his heavy executive workload, PSY hasn’t put down the microphone for good. He continues to release his own music on his own terms.
In 2022, he dropped his ninth full-length studio album aptly titled PSY 9th. The album proved that his signature high-energy, eccentric style hadn’t gone anywhere. The lead single, “That That,” featured none other than Suga of BTS, who also co-produced the track. The catchy collaboration bridged two generations of global K-pop powerhouses, instantly shooting up international charts and reminding everyone of PSY’s uncanny ability to craft an earworm.
The Legendary Live Performer
If you want to understand PSY’s current musical footprint, you have to look at his legendary live shows. In South Korea, PSY is just as famous for his grueling, wildly energetic summer and end-of-year concert series (such as his famous Summer Swag concerts) as he is for his recorded hits.
Every year, stadiums sell out within minutes as tens of thousands of fans brave water cannons, intense heat, and hours of non-stop dancing to watch PSY perform. For him, music isn’t just about streaming numbers or Billboard charts anymore; it is an interactive, theatrical live experience.
The Verdict
PSY is no longer chasing the lightning-in-a-bottle pressure of repeating “Gangnam Style” on a global scale—and by all accounts, he’s happier for it.
Whether he’s dropping high-profile collaborative tracks, running a major record label, or headlining massive stadium spectacles, PSY is still very much making music, shaping culture, and owning his legacy on his own terms.
